The fourth requirement of the PCI DSS mandates that a merchant “Encrypt transmission of cardholder data across open, public networks.” Encryption security in transmission alone, however, isn’t enough. Both end points must also be secure.
In a recent study performed by Gartner, IT professionals cited credit card data encryption as the single most challenging requirement of the PCI Data Security Standard. They also cited that on average, merchants encrypting 100,000 credit cards would pay $6 on average for each card.
