How it all fits together

  1. The Cardholder
  2. The business accepting the credit card payment.
  3. The Braintree Gateway - Software that relays credit and echeck information sent from the merchant/cardholder to the payment processing network.
  4. If it's a credit card payment, the details are sent to the issuing financial institution for approval and then the response is routed back through the processing network, to the gateway, and then back to the merchant who then displays the results to the cardholder. E-Checks are sent through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) and typically settle within 48 hours.
  5. The financial institution that issued the credit/debit card or receiving bank for the e-check transaction.
